A story embedded in a story embedded in a story. A student writes a novel about a man who is writing a novel about a group of characters who work together to fight against their oppression. Some think it to be O’Brien’s best; I prefer The Third Policeman. This is a funny book, with a non-linear plot that discusses a number of things including the writing of novels, characterization in novels, musical instruments and Irish culture.
