Nabokov employs the conventions of biography to comment on the expectations of readers with respect to that genre of narrative writing; moreover, both the narrator/ biographer and his comments on the subject of his work, the novelist Sebastian Knight, might be read as satiric reflections on the expectations of readers with respect to the conventions of the novelistic genre. Not so much wordplay as in Lolita, but a very funny book.
