I'm not sure what to rate this book. I'm tempted to give it one star but I can't say the writing was bad. I was actually invested to see what happened to Eileen, her father, and what Rebecca was going to do to make Eileen change her life around. All the characters were deplorable, the darkest of their souls exposed, but this ended up making them caricatures of themselves, especially the main character Eileen. The author made it a point to make her vile, gross, and unlikable. Moshfegh was pushing the envelope to see just how bad she could make Eileen be, how much the reader could hate her, and in doing so would have Eileen do things that I couldn't imagine any person in real life would do.
The ending was a disappointment and not believable. I could see too many holes in the way that panned out and frankly I was let down after having invested my time reading this.
