Never Let Me Go

As a huge Black Mirror fan, I picked up this book after hearing it could almost be own Black Mirror episode. To that, I say: Sure, if the episode is 90% boring melodrama with 10% undertones of a bleak and mysterious world.
The biggest draw of the book is the mystery. What kind of world is this, and what is being hidden from us? Unfortunately, even as more details emerge, the plot falls flat and doesn't go anywhere. Most of the book is melodrama between a bratty, unredeemable girl, and a protagonist who overanalyzes every single social interaction in her entire life. "She took an extra second to reply, which means the air of our conversation is now a little more tense." Ugh. (note: not an actual line from the book, but it might as well be)
If you're into soap operas or dramas where the only thing that happens is people's emotions and analyzing of said emotions, sure. If you're looking for something cerebral like Black Mirror to make you dig deep into your soul and question the world around you, or just something with a plot, tread with caution. The enticing mystery saves the book from being terrible, but what could have been a beautiful and emotional exploration of humanity doesn't turn up. This book gets a solid "it was alright" from me.
