bookshelves: famous-people, funny, memoir-and-autobiography

The excellent Born a Crime is about as far from a typical celebrity memoir as you can get. Not only does it focus on Trevor Noah's life well before he became famous, but its main purpose is something far more significant: to portray life in South Africa under apartheid, and specifically how it affected Noah as the son of a black mother and white father. This book has been nearly universally praised, and deservedly so; it conveys a lot of important information in the most crowd-pleasing way imaginable. After I finished this book I began reading one of Patti Smith's memoirs, and it was several days before it occurred to me that I'd gone straight from one celebrity memoir into another—an unusual maneuver for many readers, including me. But the most talented showbiz folk are so talented that they make you forget all about the showbiz, and that's why Born a Crime is a great book for everyone. Recommended!
