Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln

This sums up Lincoln, who wrote at 23: "Whether it be true or not, I can say for one I have no other [ambition] so great as that of being truly esteemed by my fellow men, by rendering myself worthy of that esteem. How far I shall succeed in gratifying this ambition is to be developed." This book is a great primer in the good use of the ambition so many of us have, and I took all its lessons to heart.
It's a long book. To skip the backstory and go straight to Lincoln's presidency, start w/part II, Master Among Men, on p. 323.
