The Stand

I grew up reading. I have read and enjoyed fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. I have broad tastes and find pleasure in many different kinds of books.
One of the only things I dislike about a book is one that is lengthy. I not only find it difficult to remember plot points and details about characters, I quickly lose interest and/or emotional investment. I have abandoned many longer books over my lifetime.
One of my favorite authors is Stephen King. I am determined to read every book he has written before I die.
The Stand waited on my "to-read list" and taunted me.
I can confidently say that I have completed this book! While the above complaints about lengthy books held true to this one, I stayed the course and completed the book. Again, King has written an amazing story about good and evil and human nature. King meditates on a disinterested God that demands blood sacrifice. Who needs enemies when King's God is your friend, am I right? This book is good for an old existential crises.
This book is just as problematic as any other. King can't seem to help fetishizing black people ... and that ending passage with "savages!" Yikes! But beyond that, this is a good read if you can stick it out.
