Read 9 times. Last read April 6, 2024.
Reread: April 2024
Reread: December 2023
Couldn't think of a better way to end the year. :)
Reread: August 2023
Reread: April 2023
Reread: July 2022
Baldwin never fails to pick me out of a reading slump.
Reread: June 2020
Reread: February 2019
One hundred and fifty-four.
That’s how many things I have read—at least according to ŷ—between now and my first reading of The Fire Next Time in early 2017. And among all those other essays, comics, short stories, and novels, this has never left me. There are books I rated higher that I have no memory of. It’s odd yet amazing how a slender little paperback stands out so much among the other spines on my shelf, but this is the effect of impact, I suppose.
There was never a thought of if I would pick this up again, only a matter of when the time was right.
The Fire Next Time has the weight of a finely crafted book I’ve been hungry for lately. It has that infinity feeling of knowing you can read it again and again and never tire of Baldwin’s words. It almost demands to be enjoyed at a slower pace, or at least it demands it of me.
And I still don’t feel as if I’ve grasped everything.
This is fine. I am happy to keep coming back until I do. Bumping the rating up to a 5/5.

“Please try to remember that what they believe, as well as what they do and cause you to endure does not testify to your inferiority but to their inhumanity.
