Sam is the daughter of a powerful duke who didn't have much use for her especially after his beloved wife, her mother, died. Sam always wanted to become a paladin and even received some training in fighting, but her resolve redoubles when a demon kills her mother.

She runs away from home, and disguised as a boy, joins the trainees to become a paladin. There, she meets the paladin who saved her life, Tristan, who is assigned as her trainer, and a mysterious half-demon boy, Braeden, who becomes her friend.

(view spoiler)[Braeden discovers that Sam is a woman and keeps her secret, but the two develop feelings for one another, but their mission takes front stage. They discover that the high commander is not what he seems and is in fact in league with the demons the paladins are trying to keep at bay. He is also instigating a war among the people, and by the end of the book Sam, Braeden and Tristan, who have a number of close calls with the demons that he commands, are declared traitors and join the resistance (hide spoiler)].

Engaging story, with a twist I did not expect: (view spoiler)[Braeden's master, who manipulated him as much as he trained him for years and tattooed him with wards that ensure that he cannot disobey him, is actually the high commander.

Braeden tries to do the noble thing and leave Sam behind, safe away from him, since he doesn't know what his master will make him do to her, but she'll have none of that and the story ends with the two of them sailing far away together to find a way to get rid of Braeden's tattoos (hide spoiler)].

The series continues with Uriel, but the book isn't completed yet.
