EDIT: Pre- KoA re-read, a solid 4 stars.
Look, Chaol sucks. But in re-reading my review here I remembered why I loved this book the first time and it actually hyped me up for KoA more than reading the book did. Thanks, 2017 Jennifer!
So, ok, I’m still a little bit “what the fuck happened that was too easy about this whole thing. And I want to give SJM the benefit of the doubt but it’s been a year and I’m still pissed about ACOWAR so... I have some concerns. Namely, what the hell is she going to do? She can’t kill Aelin, she can’t NOT kill Aelin, so... what? What is going to happen? (view spoiler) These are just some of the questions I have left after reading ToD and honestly, I bet I’ll still have a lot of them after I read KoA. I have a lot of anxieties. I am nervous. And there’s something about the prospect of finishing a series that is really stressful. After this week, the story will be done.
I hope that the final book does it justice.

4.899999 stars. Docked some points because Chaol.
Please do not mistake my love for this book as a love for Chaol- I still GREATLY dislike Chaol as a person and yes, I am willing to die on that mountain.
But this book was about so much more than Chaol, and I am FUCKING REELING from the plot twists SJM threw in here.
*Spoilers will be marked, but if you haven't read Empire of Storms, please proceed with caution, as my memory is shit and it's likely I will inadvertently spoil some of that book for y'all.*
Ok, so, Antica. The whole freaking southern continent. Once I got over how stupidly similar the peoples of the southern continent were to the Dothraki from Game of Thrones, I was able to actually enjoy myself. (There were also some freakishly similar parts to LOTR and the Hobbit, but I don't want to go there. Mostly because I want to focus on how much I enjoyed in Tower of Dawn, not how much felt like a parody of two great fantasy epics.) I loved the system of inheritance for the royalty, I loved the ruks (THE EAGLES! THE EAGLES ARE COMING!) (thanks Pippin), I loved (view spoiler) I loved Sartaq and Yrene (even though I fully expected her to be a lot more self-righteous) and I was 100% there for the epic plot twist.
Let's talk plot twist for a minute fam, because this plot twist. (view spoiler)
There were very few parts of the book I got fed up with, so I consider this one of my faves of the Throne of Glass series. No one was really too trying, and nothing felt too forced. Everything just slid into place nicely, like SJM had this planned all along. Which she probably did. But this felt like the piece missing in the whole series, this book answered all the questions, and now I eagerly await the conclusion. Which will hopefully scrape through with 1000 pages and be followed by two novellas. (Lolz)
Also, and this is why I'll never be Nesryn's biggest fan- (view spoiler)
All of this aside, I would like to see this be an actual battle- I want to see them fight, and win, and I would like it to not be one person being a martyr. There has to be another way, and I think there will be. I will appreciate it when SJM gets off this stupid "if I really love someone I will sacrifice my life for them because for sure they'll be happy then" kick, because that is quite literally my worst nightmare. It makes me feel terrible. Stop doing that.
Pros:
- Yrene, basically everyone in the Torre Cesme, Sartaq and like, three of his siblings, the ruks.
Cons:
- self-righteous Chaol, sheer frustration, the fact that I said out loud like 200 pages in, "I bet so-and-so is possessed" and was totally right. (That might actually be more of a pro, I'm not usually good at guessing games.)

'I wanted to heal you,' she breathed.
'You did,' he said, smiling. 'Yrene, in every way that truly matters . . . You did.'
Chaol wiped away the other tears that fell, brushing a kiss to her hot cheek.”

"Nesryn is a fucking terrible narrator. I don’t want you to spend ten pages going off about the history of the stone in the throne room you twit, pay attention to what is actually happening around you.
If Nesryn and Chaol actually paid attention to their surroundings this book could’ve actually been a novella 🙄🙄🙄"

"Things I hate: Chaol, everything about Chaol, all chapters told from Chaol’s POV.
Anyway, whatever, I’m suspending my disbelief so hard my disbelief might never come down and I’ll just be perpetually entertained by even the most insane plots. 😒"
