I really wanted to like this book, but the writing style totally ruined it for me. Pages upon pages of meandering, uninteresting text, seemingly serving no purpose other than to condescend and heavy handedly relay the author's unoriginal social grievances to the reader. None of the characters were likable, perhaps excepting the underutilized Bishop and Bethany, and all of their lives were miserable. I think this book could have used a good editor to carve out the irrelevant passages and focus more on the core characters, rather than alternating perspectives between each and every named character. It was too ambitious for me to be able to take it seriously.
