To Kill a Mockingbird has been reviewed 4.3 million times on goodreads.
Published in 1960 along with other notable works such as ; In Cold Blood, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Green Eggs and Ham, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The latter work written by Ian Fleming, who is more famous for his James Bond novels.
To Kill a Mockingbird has been assigned by high school English teachers throughout the world.
I didn't read the novel in my high school English class, as I was placed into a English class for the students who would be considered unintelligent and not amount to anything in this world except for flipping burgers at the local McDonalds. Thus my grasp of the English language suffered a great deal.
There is a common theme that runs through the entire story. That theme is: How People Act. And how we react towards those who act differently than the way we act which can result in ignorance, judging the person before you even know the person, trying to make the person conform to a certain way of life, Scout, Jem, and Dill trying to get Boo outside. Later in story, Jem remarks " it's because he wants to stay inside."
This conformity to a certain way of life leads Scout's first grade teacher to remark when she learns that Scout already knows how to read," undo the damage."
Scout is told by Alexandria and others that she is acting like a tomboy.
Later on in the story, Scout says that " if Aunty could be lady like at time like this, so could I."
This leads to a reaction by Scout and a correction by her father Atticus. Atticus has to correct his son Jem, later in the story, in the same manner when Jem gets upset about the way Bob Ewell acts and Jem's father doesn't react in a manner that most of us would react.
Alexandria becomes upset because Scout is not " acting like a Finch."
Calpurnia is reprimand by another lady at church " I wants to know why you bringin white chillun to nigger church." Calpurnia acts in response that doesn't lead to confirmation nor to any sort of meanness.
How the Rev. Sykes acted, even though Tom Robinson was found guilty. Given food to the Finch family, even though people around them were also hungry. We see people around and think of them as evil for no reason at all. Mr. Dolpus Raymond in the story who hands Dill a paper sack and Scout is worried. But its all an act. And we don't bother to truly see a person who they really are.
Jem becomes frustrated with Mrs. Dubose. The reason why Jem becomes frustrated with Mrs Dubose is simply because of the way she acts.
Every person acts differently and how we react to that person's actions will determine whether or not you put that person as equal to you or continue to live your life of hatred and malice towards every one.
Bob Ewell, even though Tom Robinson found guilty, still lived by the dump. His reaction to Atticus French's actions lead him to continuing hatred and eventually his own life.
