The Other Alcott

Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. Elise Hooper has done a great job of bringing alive a character that has, as she says in her Afterword, been long overlooked because of the fame of her sister. Hooper's writing is compelling. I liked the dialog and how she painted pictures with words. Her sense of humor (the attractive teacher/artist who turns out to be gay!) lightened up what could have been a long pretty depressing journey through life. I think I have a much deeper understanding of how difficult it was to be female and an artist. This book reminds me a lot of The Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland, a book I also thoroughly enjoyed.
