Personally, the only part that I found truly scary, was that Winston, with is obviously strong mind was willing to give his mind up. Other than that I found the relationship between Winston and Julia only important as so far as to change Winston's outlook on ordinary life. The first 4/5 of the book were amazing the last 5th, underwhelming.
