Wow, what a disappointment, in fact if I was the author, I might have said something ridiculous like "my disappointment was palpable". Gruen's use of adjectives and metaphors seems worse than you might learn in English 101.
She comments in her author's note, how much research she did on the subject before writing the story. I think she should have taken a writing class (or ten). The entire novel was poorly written, the characters were extremely weak, and the plot unbelievable.
All that said, Gruen is probably a good writer and I just happened to pick one that didn’t resonate. I believe she got wrapped up in the history of circuses and yet had no "real" experiences that would have helped create a believable tale.
Maybe I just got up on the wrong side of the bed today?
