The one piece that stands head and shoulders above the whole rest of the collection is called "A Tale of Two Profiles." It's about how Trayvon Martin was portrayed in the white media as a monster and a criminal even when he didn't do anything but get shot walking home from the store. And on the other hand, the younger brother of the Boston Marathon Bombers was portrayed as a sweet, mixed up kid even though he took part in cold-blooded, premeditated murder. And the only difference is that the creepy terrorist looked "cute" in photographs, and also white. Trayvon Martin was not cute. He was black.
That one essay deserves five stars, but the rest of this collection is junk. When you praise infantile garbage like the Sweet Valley High books, you can hardly complain about Fifty Shades of Grey. Contrarily, when you trash DJANGO UNCHAINED for presenting real historical violence honestly, you can't sentimentalize the bloody, juvenile teen fantasies of THE HUNGER GAMES. Roxane Gay has a tendency to take lazy cheap shots without ever analyzing her own motives, resentments, or aspirations, and she waves off any lapse in logic or intellectual discipline with some airy disclaimer like, "but I don't know what that says about me."
It says you're more interested in getting over than you are in getting real.
