Full review now posted!
I think I'm going to settle on four stars for now. This obviously isn't the best piece of literature in the world, but I just loved seeing and being reunited with all of these characters!
So obviously, if you don't like these characters, you aren't going to like this novella, because there really is no plot, it's just sort of a collection of little scenes that made me have a ridiculously huge smile on my face while reading. It was just really sweet.
SPOILERS BELOW:
What I liked:
-Um....the Illyrian snowball fight!
-Cassian telling Amren she looks like an angry snowball
-Cassian fighting for the Illyrian girls' rights constantly!
-Feyre and Rhys seemed to have some of their snark back that I felt they completely lost in Acowar, although I'm definitely ready for new narrators because I feel like SJM has done all she possibly can with them as narrators at this point.
-Mor and Cassian's perspectives! Especially Mor, I loved being inside her head and am like 90% sure SJM is paving the way for a spinoff novel for her!
-Azriel being a snarky little sweetheart
-Um Lucien and his band of exiles?!?! I think that's freaking amazing and adorable and obviously I'm pretty sure he's gonna get a spinoff as well with Vassa and Jurian and it's gonna be amazing, (Feyre I don't care if you think it's stupid I'm all here for this so you can choke if you don't like it get off your high horse girl)
-Cass talking about Nesta's "I'm reading smut and I don't want Cassian to know" pose because I just thought that was hilarious because that's basically me whenever I'm reading an SJM book 😂
-Mor and Feyre's interactions and overall adorable friendship
-the healing through art! I thought this whole message was spectacular and inspiring.
-The scene with the tapestry weaver
-Both of Tamlin's scenes, surprisingly! I think there's still a lot SJM wants to do with his character, and I actually felt sorry for him in this book (which does not excuse his actions towards Feyre and Lucien in any way), but there's definitely some redemption type story I feel is gonna happen there...maybe the second novella?
-I really liked Elain in this!
-How Nesta is the only one who treats feysand like real humans and takes them off their pedestals
-Basically all the conversations and banter with the inner circle
-the sex wasn't as excessive as I thought it would be!
-There is still political posturing/tension despite the more relaxed air of this novella
-THE TEASER. OMG I'M DECEASED.
What I didn't like:
-Rhysand (#bringbackACOMAFrhys2k18)
-In Rhys' first pov, all he can think about is how he wants to be buried inside of Feyre and it honestly made my steadily decreasing respect of him since ACOMAF decrease further. However, his narrative definitely improved once SJM found her groove and by the end, he was too busy being "perfect" to think about sex every moment
-Um...Nesta. Not that I don't like her character, (she's still one of my favs), I just don't like where SJM took her in this novella. I know she's going through intense grief, but honestly, Nesta is the last person I'd expect to turn to booze and boys as a coping mechanism; I feel it didn't really match her character. Then again, people aren't themselves when in pain like she's feeling.
-Nesta's weird inner monologue regarding Cassian idk how to describe it all but you know what I'm talking about
-Did i mention Rhysand?
-The wall scene made me want to physically gouge my eyeballs out with a plastic spork--it was weird, even for SJM--like, they were having sex in their heads and physically and I was just like
-Feyre's decision to try to start a family with Rhys seemed quite sudden and i mean...she's so young. Like obviously if you want to have kids at that age that's great, more power to you, I just am bringing this up because it's also something Maas did in her Throne of Glass series, and I feel she's putting unrealistic expectations on the teen girls that read this that they should be married and ready to have families when they're like 20 and it just rubs me the wrong way.
-I am officially bored with Rhys and Feyre's narration and am ready for the spinoffs!
-Rhys has forgiven Elain but not Nesta because...Elain is nicer even though she's just as much to blame?
-Rhysand is such a "feminist." Like that part where he told Feyre all she was good for was sex. Really he's inspirational. Setting feminism back at least 20 years. Way to go, bud. Let's be real, Cass is the feminist of this series and if that changes next book like it did for rhys from acomaf to acofas i am officially done
-ACTUALLY EVERYONE STOP PRESSURING ELAIN INTO A RELATIONSHIP WITH LUCIEN THAT INCLUDES ALL YOU REAL HUMANS AND THE CHARACTERS IN THIS BOOK SHE HAS EVERY RIGHT TO BE MEAN TO HIM I HONESTLY CAN'T WITH ANYONE ANYMORE
-Rhysand can choke
Other than all of those things, I just have a few more things to say. First, this read almost like the fan fiction where each week a new chapter is added to me? Maybe it's because for the most part this doesn't have a plot, and some of the moments in this book just felt so contemporary to me.
Last, THE NESSIAN SPINOFF! Omg I'm so excited, but also scared? I feel like it might be suuuuuper similar to ACOMAF in the sense that the main character needs to heal, falls in love with guy, and also a large portion of ACOMAF is in the Illyrian mountains so I just hope it won't be the the same formula. And Nessian better not go down the same self-destructive path feysand went down and come out flat, perfect, shells or I swear I am done with everything ever. She can't ruin them she just can't. Please please message me with your thoughts and feelings about this because I want to talk!
I think that's it! 🤗🤗🤗
