I am really, really conflicted about this book. On one hand, it has all the delightful character interaction, solid action scenes, and fun and fascinating new spins on mythology I've come to expect from Hearne. But on the other hand, as the story unfolded, a flaw in Hearne's world that's been ignorable until now was brought screaming to the surface. And something happened that turned my stomach against Atticus, and therefore the series in general. Details under the spoiler-cut:

Katherine Yes yes yes, a thousand times, to your observation on eternal gang rape. I had the same WTF!???!? moment. I know that Hearne got out of that one with Freyja being rescued by her cats - but it was still an ugly, UGLY bit of plot.

Chechoui "Bad Druid! No biscuit!" LOL totally agreed with your review.

Tom Couldn't agree with you more. Especially when Atticus seems to view mass murder as collateral damage.

Hans-terje Hjørring "Deliberately incurring Bacchus' wrath by claiming to be him or one of his representatives while committing theft? That's just asking for trouble."

Bacchus was already coming for Atticus because he had killed his minions :)

Ward G Priscilla thanks for posting the spoiler part.
Have to agree. I am not thrilled with the idea of the main character.
Having no scruples about caring less collateral damage, from their actions.
They may not be perfect. Yet need to try and have some standard to hold to.

Chris Zapata Despite the gods often easy dispatching, it is suiting as this is common in Norse mythology. For example, a god named Baldr, is killed where nothing else in the world can harm him by a mistletoe dart! Relating to Hearne: Ratatosk's death is sudden and swift. Leaving both Atticus and I aghast, this was perfect. Why does the ease of destruction steer you away from the next book where will miss out on Oberon’s antics?
“What's silly is paying five bucks for hot milk and flavored syrup! But now I see what's really been going on all this time! They charge you all that money because they need it for the R & D! Somewhere on the outskirts of Seattle, there's a secret facility with higher security than Area 51, and inside there are men with poor eyesight and bad haircuts wearing white coats, and they're trying to make the Holy Grail of all coffee drinks.

The bacon latte?

No, Atticus, I already told you those exist! I'm talking about the prophecy! 'Out of the steam and the foam and the froth, a man in white with poor eyesight will craft a liquid paradox, and it shall be called the Triple Nonfat Double Bacon Five-Cheese Mocha!'

Oberon, what the F---?

Sonia This review says exactly what I thought of this book. Such a disappointment.

Jim Westcott agreed! For me it was the crescendo of an unsavory character into vileness.

Erik Niells The “offering up of Freyja it was the end for me. I thought the series was okay, but I have not desire to read more after that. It just was the final “I really really don’t like Atticus in the slightest moment for me.

Dance With Me Then I wouldn't mind the Freya incident so much if Atticus were a better representation of Iron Age Celtic mentality but he's just so... americanised.
I really dislike how the Norse gods were portrayed in this, and I had hoped the books would have been a better celebration of Celtic culture.
