Decided to change my rating to 3 stars instead of 1 star because this book has really stuck with me and I have thought about it so much over the years. I still really hated reading it, but I do love the overall story and the idea of it. I also watched the Japanese drama adaption which I think solidified my love of the story. The writing just isn't for me. But I do think people should give it a try. Maybe the writing will work for you.

Edit: Finished it. I didn't like it at all. I think the idea was interesting but god.. the execution was dreadfully boring and idgaf inducing for me. D:

(view spoiler)[And not to mention it is completely unbelievable. For those of you saying they are sheep, and that's the point, that they live in a bubble... Well. I don't really get that "bubble" thing at all. Not when they were pretty much "set free" and "unsupervised" after they left Hailsham. They had access to people, to books, to television. They were aloud to travel and BE ON THEIR OWN. TO OBSERVE. I mean.. sure they were brainwashed a bit.. but over all their thought processes seemed pretty normal. They were able to ask the questions that would have lead them to finding a life worth living. They would have fought the system.

Can I just say what the heck? I am over halfway through and I still have no idea what's going on.. yet at the same time I already feel like I have figured out everything that will happen, and ..... shit.

I HAVE SO MUCH ANGST.

First of the writing is so bad. Over Skype this is how I described the writing to my friend:

"SO 'THIS' HAPPENED WHICH REMINDS ME OF A 'STORY' AND THIS 'STORY' REMINDS ME OF A TIME WHEN 'THIS' HAPPENED AND 'THAT' MAKES ME REMEMBER A TIME WHEN 'THIS' HAPPENED AND 'THAT' LED TO 'THIS' HAPPENING WHICH REMINDS ME OF ANOTHER 'STORY' WHERE...." etc etc etc and then he never freaking FINISHES ANY OF HIS STORIES OR MEMORIES THEY ALL SMUSH TOGETHER NEVER GETTING RESOLVED AND NOTHING IS IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER ITS LIKE BRAIN VOMIT IDEK and I get that, okay, maybe, probably, he will resolve it all in the end... and I'm sure it will all come together and be wonderful BUT HIS EXICUTION IS STRESSING ME OUT I DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT ALL THESE LITTLE DETAILS THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING AND ARE UNRELATED TO.. EVERYTHING.

Okay, that may have been a little bit rage-y, but whatever, this book is raging me.

Another thing I just have to ask, is why the fuck was Tommy ever with Ruth? Ruth is an idiotic dumbass. (Not to mention, why would someone like Ruth who tried her best to be seen as PERFECT AND ALL KNOWING.... date someone who was the #1 bullied kid loser everyone hated for like 5 years????? MAKES NO SENSE.) Also why does Kathy at that, even talk to her? I get that they lived a horribly... uh.. weird.. and.. uh.. sheltered.. or something... life? but I don't think... that's an excuse for being friends with such a stupid manipulative person who is using you.

Also, ON THAT NOTE... KIND OF..... It makes none of the story believable to me. Would these kids really have all these "HIDDEN SECRETS THAT MUST NOT BE MENTIONED WITH SECRET UNDERSTANDINGS NOT TO.... JUST BECAUSE." /cue mysterious music

..... Sorry idk I JUST DON'T BUY IT AND CAN'T TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. I will finish it because it was recommended to me by a good friend, and I only have about 1/5th left to read.. but... D: D: NOT LIKING THIS.

It also doesn't help probably that I just finished 'Unwind', and pretty much knew immediately what 'Donations' would be... :/ (hide spoiler)]
