I decide to read Emma by Jane Austen after being assigned to read a classic book for my literature class. I knew that Jane Austen is a classic writer that many people love, so I decided to try one of her novels myself. Even though Pride and Prejudice was recommended to me by friends, I decided to try Emma. I was drawn to this novel after reading it's description on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ since it states "With its imperfect but charming heroine and its witty and subtle exploration of relationships, Emma is often seen as Jane Austen's most flawless work." Although it is not my favorite book of all time, I would recommend this book to many people.
The main character, Emma, is very charming. She tries very hard to create relationships for other people, especially for her friend, Harriet. Even though I liked Emma overall, there were parts where I disliked her. She influenced Harriet's choices all the time and Harriet never really made a choice for herself. Everything turned out okay in the end, but it reminds me of peer pressure in a way. Emma influenced Harriet's decisions similar to how friends influence each other's actions.
I also dislike the Eltons in the novel. They were very stuck up and tried to one up Emma at times. It is like in real life when one person does something and then people begin to compete to do the same in order to be the best. I also thought it was weird that Mr. Elton went out and married a woman with similarities to Emma after she denied him. I understand that he liked her, but then why would you go out and marry a different girl? When most people are in a similar situation, they take time to get over it and then begin a new relationship, not get married.
The characters in this book all had their own story which was really interesting. I loved reading about them all and getting a glimpse into their lives. The details provided were all very good and set a clear picture in my head about their looks. For instance on page 13, it says "Mr. Knightley, a sensible man about seven or eight-and-thirty, was not only a very old and intimate friend of the family, but particularly connected with it, as the elder brother of Isabella's husband". This small section of the paragraph gives some details about him, and helps create a picture of his life. This happens in many parts of the book and enlarges the meaning of the story for me. If details like the character descriptions were not included and written just so, I would have had so many more questions about their life's and events that took place.
Overall, Austen was very good at answering all the questions and puzzles I had while reading. Whenever I was curious about something, I always found the answers a couple of pages later. At one point I was curious about the meaning of the poem Mr. Elton gave Emma and after reading further, it was said to mean courtship.
