Wishcraft: How to Get What You Really Want

This book is easily the best and most important book I've read this year!
What makes this book so important is the metaskill that Barbara Cher teaches the reader - how to go out and get what you want.
The essence of this book can be pulled from the title itself - Wishcraft. Or rather Wish-Craft. The first part is the "wishing" part, and Barbara walks the reader through several exercises that removes their inhibitions and allows them to reveal what they truly want out of life.
The "craft" part is where the rubber meets the road or where the reader comes out of the clouds and puts their feet on the ground. Barbara is able to switch gears teaches the nuts and bolts - the skills - needed to get from the present to your dreams. What is so great about this book is she explicitly tells you how to take step after step toward your goals. That's where this book shines over other self-help literature, it is explicit! Nothing is left to chance. She wants you to succeed is giving you the game plan to make it happen.
The magic of this book is how Barbara bridges this chasm. Most people see this chasm between where they want to go and where they are now and it stops them dead in their tracks. After reading this book, they'll know what to do next and even if you don't they'll know how to get the answers. After reading this book you'll be busy building bridges to those long lost childhood dreams or to wildest fantasies in spite of fears and doubts.
The book is well written and thoughtful. She doesn't seem to leave any stone uncovered. One of the biggest parts of becoming successful is the mental dimension and she takes considerable time to address this mental dimension to achieving your dreams. Fear and doubt loom in your path to success. Barbara gives you the sword and shield to help you slay these dragons, or at least how to walk around these monsters.
This book resonated with me so much since I feel like this is a skill I was deprived of learning. If I had learned this skill when a teenager or young adult, I shudder to think about where my life would be at now! I'm learning that setting and achieving goals is a skill much like programming in C++ or tying a shoelace. After you learn it, you are unstoppable. Until then good luck because you are rolling the dice on your future.
Favorite Quotes:
"But I want you to know that most dreams are not impossible. We've just been brainwashed into thinking they are. A few limits to possibility are in the human body. A few. The rest are in the mind, and those can be changed."
"Fear is the natural companion of creative action. There is only one way to live free of fear - and that is to live without hope, change, or growth."
"All the people we call "geniuses" are men and women who somehow escaped having to put that curious, wondering child in themselves to sleep. Instead, they devoted their lives to equipping that child with the tools and skills it needed to do its playing on an adult level."
"In the age of ecology, we ourselves are the only creatures we would ever expect to flourish in an environment that does not give us what we need! We wouldn't order a spider to spin an exquisite web in empty space, or a seed to sprout on a bare desk top. And yet that is exactly what we have been demanding of ourselves.
As a results, most of use are not aware that we didn't grow up in an environment that nurtured genius. We just think we aren't geniuses, and blame heredity or our own lack of character for the spot we're in. Whatever was amiss with the environment we grew up in, we figure "geniuses" had it just as bad or worse. They just had the mysterious fortitude to overcome it. We don't see the grandmother or special teacher who was there with the right kind of love and help at the right moment. We wouldn't recognize the key features of a nurturing environment if we feel over them."
Pros:
- Well written and well-organized. This book easily holds your attention.
- You'll actually learn how to make your dreams come true!!!
Cons:
- After reading this book, you won't be able to go back to old ways.
- A little dated. She has a few anachronistic moments in her book. For instance,
I enthusiastically recommend this book to everyone independent of demography or history. I think even Bill Gates or the uber-successful entrepreneur, artist, or athlete. I honestly believe anyone who reads this book can gain alot from it. Check it out.
