This one is probably one of my favourite Stephen King novels. The claustrophobic setting King creates is so unsettling and I was genuinely freaked out at so many parts of this story. The first section and last section are my favourites - the middle was not as intense because it was sort of setting up for the end of the story.

Annie Wilkes is the most messed up character. The scene with the lawn mower and the police officer was so gruesome and horrific. When she cut off Paul's foot and his thumb I was so disgusted. She is the typical - I'm not crazy - but she is in fact mentally messed up character. The scene before Paul is saved where the police officers find out that Annie died with a chainsaw in her hand ... planning on murdering Paul was terrifying.

I think the after part was done so well. Poor Paul is forever traumatised by what Annie put her through and yet she is dead and still haunting him from beyond the grave. It makes me so heart-broken that Paul has this constant anxiety that Annie is alive and coming for him. Also ... Annie was like Misery in that it was like she'd never die.

It is also terrifying that he wrote his best book because he was under torture basically. And yet now, it is almost as though those horrific experiences fuel his future writing. That is so sad because it means that a core part of his life is forever marred by Annie Wilkes.

I like that Paul is a well-developed character despite us not knowing too much of his backstory other than that he is a writer and a small story from his childhood. It goes to show that King is good at creating a plot with just the bare bones of a character and yet breathing life into his characters.

I highly recommend this! Unless you do not like reading gore.
