Okay, so, I really like the overall story of "It," however, it's really difficult to read and enjoy such a long book when you already know the story and how it ends. It takes away so much of the suspense!
While it's essentially the same story as the movie(s), there are some major differences. (view spoiler)
I mean, there were definitely more adult themes, sexual content, and violence in the book that's left out in the movies (thank goodness!). I was warned about one particular sex scene towards the end of the book, however, it wasn't quite as explicit or as shocking as I thought it might be. Still very awkward and I'd even argue at nonconsensual. (view spoiler)
Actually, there were quite a number of very awkward type things in the book: (view spoiler)
Also, there was a point towards the end when the story went a bit overboard in the sense that it was more laughable than scary. (view spoiler)
As far as the violence goes, well, I think the pervasive violence in the surrounding town of Derry is scarier than "It." (initially, at least) (view spoiler)
As far as the ending goes, well, I think it's different from the movie. I need to watch the movie again! I don't really like the overall ending to the book as I feel it's a bit too sad on the bittersweet side. (view spoiler)
Anyway, I'm very excited to see the next movie they come out with for this, and to see how similar it is to the book.
I'll leave you with a quote from the book that I really like:
"His fear was already gone; it had slipped away from him as easily as a nightmare slips away from a man who awakes, cold-skinned and gasping, from its grip; who feels his body and stares at his surroundings to make sure that none of it ever happened and who then begins at once to forget it. Half is gone by the time feet hit the floor; three-quarters of it by the time he emerges from the shower and begins to towel off; all of it by the time he finishes his breakfast. All gone ... until the next time, when, in the grip of the nightmare, all fears will be remembered." (p. 8)
