I've been putting off reading this one for a long time, mostly because I really didn't think I would be able to enjoy "young adult" novels at this age. The short of it is that I was wrong. This book isn't a young adult novel, it just starts off with a character who is 16 years old, but he grows up really quickly and is 18 when the action really starts, and 20 when the second book takes over. It reads like a high fantasy novel. This book really surprised me.

There were a few things I didn't like (combining random words for seemingly no reason other than the dystopian sci-fi cliche), but for the most part I really enjoyed it. I fell in love with some of the characters: (view spoiler). The first 1/3 of the book was particularly enjoyable because it felt reminiscent of Wolverine's Weapon X origins to me. The last 2/3 of the book were just wild, all out pandemonium. The action is awesome and almost nonstop. I respect the author's way of writing battles and coming up with creative and unique strategies, as well as his ability to write characters that readers can attach themselves to.

I've read some reviews that deem Darrow a "Gary Stu", and I have to disagree. I don't remember the exact number, but they say that they've tried to infiltrate with like 90 other people before Darrow. He's just to first to make it, so of course he's going to be the best. That being said, he's flawed in so many ways, ways that work. If readers wanted to read a story about another Red who failed to make it before Darrow, then I don't know what to tell you. We're getting the success story. Clearly, he's going to be the one with traits that helped him succeed.

Great book and fast read.

I think this was the perfect series to get into while I wait for the 8th volume of Rick Remender's Deadly Class to come out. I recommend this for any Deadly Class/Harry Potter/Lord of the Flies fans (and I would say The Hunger Gamesfans, because everyone keeps saying Red Rising is like that series, but I didn't like The Hunger Games, and I loved this book. So take from that what you will).
