The Glorious Adventures Of Tyl Ulenspiegl

The harsh living standards and brutality with which these people lived during the Spanish Inquisition and struggle for dutch independence is mind blowing. Scenes of torture are described in truly horrific detail. The prints are absolutely breathtaking.
But the way Tyl, our hero, deals with this mistreatment and struggles for peace of mind and righteousness through, oddly enough, clowning, is heartening and extremely strengthening to the spirit.
I was so upset and enamored and moved by this book I couldn't stand to finish it, so I unconsciously lost it.
