The Handmaid's Tale

The word of the moment is "dystopia" but I'm an old-fashioned guy so I'll stick with "Orwellian" here and say that this made me feel the anguish and distress of living in a totalitarian society. The obvious modern model would be North Korea but this isn't a book so much about reordering a society as about the classification, subjugation and objectification of women "for their own and society's benefit." Sexism at its most extreme, the idea that choice only exposed women to danger and prohibiting choice and assigning roles to them results finally protects them from danger, all under a pseudo-Christian banner. Scary stuff but well-developed and well-presented in an excellent bleak futuristic novel.
