WOW WOW WOWWY WOW!!!! This freaking book!!! What a fantastic start to this series. Truly. I'll be honest, I was a bit intimidated by the size of this book when I got it. I usually don't read such long books, but holy cow I'm so glad I did!!!
So the story has sort of an African setting, but it takes place in the mythical land of Orïsha. A world where people with magical abilities (maji) once lived alongside humans. However, now magic no longer exists, the gods are believed to be dead by many, and all maji have been destroyed by the king. One of the only reminders that magic ever existed are the diviners; the children who would have eventually become maji had magic not gone away. The diviners are now considered the dregs of society. They are often referred to as maggots, and are treated as second class citizens.
This brings us to Zelie, a scrappy 17 year old diviner who unwittingly becomes the only one who might be capable of bringing magic back to Orïsha. Together with her brother and the Princess Amari she tries to bring magic back to her people while also trying to outrun Amari's brother Prince Inan who has been sent by the king to stop them.
The book is long, but once I started I honestly never even noticed the length. If anything, I wanted more! I was NOT ready for it to end! The book is action packed right from the start. Honestly there were times I'd need to stop and just breathe for a minute. I probably messaged my bestie every five minutes anxiety ridden there at the end, scared to go on (she probably hates me now), but it was so intense!!!
I also love that the author managed to take all the cliche elements of a YA fantasy and do something completely fresh and different with them. On the surface this seems like it could be your run of the mill YA book, but the characters are so well developed, and the plot was so strong. I never felt like I had the story figured out, which I kinda loved.
This was a great beginning to what promises to be an amazing series. I'm actually almost sad I read the book because now I have to wait for the next one and I'm so impatient!
