Terrible. I couldn't even finish it. Like Dana said, "it reads like a really bad soap opera". The whole time I kept thinking, "who the hell are these people, where is this going, and why should I care?". HUGE letdown in comparison to "The Curious Incident...". You'd think when you get halfway through a book that is only 350 pages or so, even if it doesn't seem that great, you can tell from the way the author is writing that there will at least be a payoff when you get to the end. Not the case with this one. The only reason it became a best seller is high expectation from Haddon's previous books. As far as I can see right now, he's a one hit wonder, and "The Curious Incident..." worked out far better for him. I wonder if he was thinking "crap, I need to write another book. Now what? Uhhh, okay I'll write about this." Crap. Not even witty or mildly amusing.

Dana I'm in full agreement, and I stand by the statement that it reads like a bad soap opera. "Curious Incident..." was a hard act to follow, and I never expected "A Spot of Bother" to be quite as good, but it never really came close. Perhaps I'll go back to it in 30 years. I can read it when I'm not watching my stories on the telly.
