did not like it

The movie was better than the book.

"The Postman" (1997) featuring Kevin Costner always seemed like one of those movies that was good, but could be better. It seemed like the book would have more space to explore some of the concepts that may have been dropped by the movie. The movie, however, appears to have focused on the best parts of the book.

The book has a great high concept and starts off with promise. At about the halfway point, it seems to get lost in repetitive scenes that seem to be set pieces for exposition. The dialogue is so clunky that I double checked to see if it was translated from another language.

By the 75% mark, the book takes a few unexpected twists that didn't feel quite right in this story. No spoilers here, but it seemed like the author combined two shorter books to make one long, confusing book. I would have preferred two tightly written novellas.

I rarely complete books that I dislike this much, but I wanted to see how the movie compared to the book. Both had great high concepts and smart, compelling scenes, but I preferred the movie.
