This is one seriously creepy novel. “Lying in Wait is a character driven novel, told by three characters. Lydia Fitzsimons starts the tale and takes the lead in giving the reader the creeps. From the start, the reader knows that Lydia has some serious issues. Lydia informs the reader that her husband didn’t mean to kill Annie Doyle, and Lydia’s logic begs scrutiny. Next, Karen, Annie’s sister gives her version of Annie’s disappearance. Karen is the only remotely sane character in the novel. The third character is Laurence, Lydia’s son who has some serious issues of his own.

Author Liz Nugent slowly reveals pieces of information about Annie’s last moments. Nugent slowly divulges the background of Lydia who will hold the “crazy wife/mother character award for a long time. Lydia and Laurence have one of the most disturbingly dysfunctional mother/son relationships written.

I couldn’t put this freaky novel down. It’s a disturbing story yet totally engrossing! I highly recommend it for a time when you want to read a page turning twisted thriller.
