"Marjane Satrapi was 6 or 7 when the Iranian Revolution occurred. The first book (of 4) is about the years leading up to the revolution and describe her family’s involvement in the demonstrations against the Shah. Marjane’s initial wish is to become the first female Prophet, though her parents aren’t religious. After the revolution, nothing turns out as expected, and Marjane learns very harsh lessons along the way."

"Life is in peril under Iraqi bombs. Boys are recruited to the front as cannon fodder. Religious restrictions worsen: no music, dancing, playing cards or chess, or drinking booze, all punishable with whippings and jail. Marjane, ever rebellious still insists on wearing jeans, won’t cover her face, speaks up in class. Her parents decide to send her to Vienna for her own security as executions become routine."

"The 3rd book was the toughest, so far. War and repression led Marjane’s parents to send her to Vienna for her safety. A student and a lone foreigner with little money, going through adolescent growing pains, first love, and eventual destitution; it was heartbreaking to watch. And so difficult for her, she decided to return to Iran and her parents, where war still raged and individual liberties still didn’t exist."
