Oh my word ! What a wonderful modern take on love and life from teens to twenties , brilliant writing I've heard Rooney referred to as the "new austen" a term banned around for many new authors but in this case id have to agree , her prose her characters are spot on and the raw emotions all absolutely stunning. I was put off reading this due to all the hype and the fact that I was the odd one out, not at all enjoying her debut novel "Conversations with friends" I actually gave up on it. So if that has put you off and you haven't yet picked up this great little book then I urge you to I think its wonderful, it captures those feelings and relationships you develop in your teens /twenties beautifully (By the time your in your 40s you say it how it is have only real friends around you & pretty much don’t care if “some people don’t get you ) the t0-ing and fro-ing with upspoken feelings and the intenseness of new sexual relationships that you forget later in life, and deeper than those raw emotions when your young but how unsure you are in your own skin , how other people’s thoughts and comments really matter and really can be a knife in the heart , how easy it is for some to fall into toxic friendships and relationships and to go with the flow as thats the easy way . The way the novel deals with these toxic relationships anxiety and depressing are perhaps the best Iv ever read . I do think teens and twenties have it so much harder today than when I was coming of age In the 80s , a lot more pressure and toxic social media have to take a good chunk of the blame , we hear about it in the news all to often of young people being manipulated , anyway a stunning read cant wait to see what she does next.
