it was amazing

I enjoyed it tremendously. Even though I like Greek mythology, and thought I knew quite a bit about the Odyssey, the Iliad and, specifically, Circe, I still had to look a few stories up.
Such a rich, textured, multi-faceted novel.
Predictably, this Circe harks back to archetypes of witch/wise woman/crone, who is one of my personal interests. I began to identify with the crone around the age of 50. But Circe is immortal, so she embodies all three ages of woman at once: maid, mother, and crone.
The author clearly has a feminist bend, which I also liked very much. She even managed to partly justify the "bad deeds" of Circe (the Scylla fiasco, turning men into pigs, raging against gods). Her relationships with several partners are explored and explained (Daedalus, Odysseus, Hermes...). The author even touches upon the eternal mystery of childbirth, i.e. how do women choose to do it again (and, in my case, yet again), despite knowing what an ordeal it is. (I do not believe that women "forget" the pain of childbirth).
The myth of Circe left some unexplained details (marriages after the death of Odysseus, connection to Penelope etc.). I found this novel's treatment of them to be creative and convincing.
This is a long book. I began to lose interest towards the end. I was a bit tired/irritated at the audio narrator, whose style was, IMHO, a bit overly dramatic or even melodramatic. But then if I had to read this meaty novel, I may not have had the patience to finish. (I listened to most of it during airplane travel with a long layover on the way)
Nevertheless, I recommend it. I am planning to explore more works of this author.
