I had super low expectations going into this, but found myself really enjoying it. I really liked the characters (the side characters were also great) and even though the ending was corny as all hell, I thought it was a solid read.

Katharine Totally agree with you on the issue of lack of diversity and the one diverse character serving as a catalyst for inspiration of the (white) mc. However, I do feel like it's important to note that cystic fibrosis is the most common genetic disease in the caucasian population, so while there are some POC with CF, it's fairly rare. (FWIW, I'm a person with CF.) That doesn't excuse them using the one POC in the way they did, but it at least might explain the lack of diversity.
