it was ok
bookshelves: read-2025, did-not-finish

I don‘t remember* why I added this to my TBR pile 7 years ago. I finally got to it though. And I bounced off it. I don‘t like the writing, it‘s confusing and boring. There is no backstory or meaningful world building. I liked the 1st person narrator, Croaker, well enough. But I didn‘t care about him, the other stereotypical characters or the barely there plot enough to continue.

DNF in the 2nd chapter, at 21% and around 67 pages. I peeked at the beginning of all the subsequent chapters and it looked like more of the same, aka moving from A to B and not much else. The rape scene didn‘t help, although I guess it needed to be there to make this grim.

If you start reading this and feel as confused as I was at the beginning of this book, I recommend this fandom wiki:

Careful though, it‘s full of spoilers!

*Found it, it was a free Tor.com’s eBook of the Month, back in 2018.

“Evil is relative…You can’t hang a sign on it. You can’t touch it or taste it or cut it with a sword. Evil depends on where you are standing, pointing your indicting finger.”
