really liked it
bookshelves: sci-fi, man-fantasy

Hey! It's a space story with Marines and no vagina plotlines! And I REALLY LOVED IT!

This is the first in a series of a hero brought back from stasis to save the universe. I loved the world, the space fights, the manly commanding of Jack, the idea of a mythical hero that is accidentally discovered and revived in space, and where the myth and reality clash. Dude is a bossy pants, but I enjoyed this a LOT! Good clean military space fun!

David Monroe I'm not a fan of David Weber or David Drake style military SF but if it's in the vein of William Dietz, john Scalzi, Lois McMaster Bujold or even Richard K. Morgan, I might give it a go.

Of all the authors you mentioned, I think it would be more in the vain of Weber then anyone. However, I think it's worth picking up, as well as the next novel in the series.

Sandy Williams This was one of my favorite discoveries of... 2010, I think. I read the first three books in the series (the next one wasn't out at the time), and the main thing I remember is one battle scene where it seriously felt like the universe was going to come crashing down around me. I must have held my breath through the entire fight. It was awesome! I'm pretty sure the scene I'm talking about wasn't in the first book, though.

Damn, this reminds me that I really need to finish this series!

Angie If it has Marines, I will like it. I cut my sci-fi teeth on David Weber and Elizabeth Moon.

Mike (the Paladin) I like these a lot better than Weber. I burned out on DW but really like these, so far.

Adrian Of course he's a bossy pants.....he the admiral of the fleet. Its his job. Note that certain captains boss him around though. I don't know who's more dangerous, her or the fleet.

Joel Carlson So when you say "vagina plotlines"... I'm not entirely sure where you're going with that one.

Archimedes Grimm No romance, good fight scenes, and the warring between reality and legend; I'm liking the look of this series a lot.

Jamie Felicia - did you feel that it resembled "The Warriors" at all (the fighting their way out from behind enemy lines)?

Mike (the Paladin) Jamie???? Could you give a link? "The Warriors" leads to a lot of books and since I liked this series (the Lost Fleet) I wondered what you were referring to.

Thanks.

I was referring to the movie upon which the game she and her brother played on Co-Optitude is based (see for the episode of Ryon and Felicia being 70s gangsters). That movie, in turn, was based on Xenophon's "Anabasis" or The March Up Country.

Mike (the Paladin) The March Up Country|501325]Thanks. Have you read The Ten Thousand? It's a military fantasy also based onAnabasis 1-4 The March Up Country.

David C. "No romance..."

That unpleasant element erupts in book two. Romance is not this author's strength. I skipped it.

MacWithBooksonMountains Marcus Felicia. Your review rocks. I loved myself almost crooked when reading "no vagina plot line". ✌

Bee Mills What's a vagina plotline? Enquiring minds want to know!

Jeff Suter I think I know what you mean by "no vagina plotline" but could you elaborate? I'd hate to think you don't like female protagonists or central characters?

Cesar Felipe Did you call romantic plots "vagina plotlines"? Like.... why?

Chandra Somehow it doesn’t surprise me that you would make a comment like “vagina plotlines. :/
