Pretty Little Liars (Pretty Little Liars, #1)

I can't adequately describe how much I've enjoyed this book. Maybe it's what I needed after The Dovekeepers. Although both novels offered the perspectives of four women, I think I prefer the milieu of Mainline Philadelphia vs. The Masada in 70 C.E.
In Pretty, the lives of four teen girls is sharply rendered, insightful and amusing. Despite the circumstances of a murdered frenemy coming back to haunt them, so to speak, in most aspects this novel is both honest and real in its portrayal. The girls depicted here use the "F" word, smoke – both weed and tobacco – drink and, of course, hook -up.
This little slice of death is simply told but not simplistic, fast-paced and often fun. I found myself literally laughing out loud in some places and squirming in others. I'd sad it took me six years to read it; I can't wait to pick up the sequel.
