In 1970, Carly Sears is a recent widow, as her husband has been killed overseas in Vietnam. She is pregnant with a little girl and her deceased husband never knew he was even becoming a dad. She’s staying with her sister and brother-in-law in North Carolina on the Outer Banks when she receives the news that her daughter has a heart condition that’ll result in death at—or quickly following—birth. Carly panics, not wanting to lose the last piece of Joe she has left, their unborn daughter.

Carly’s brother-in-law Hunter tells her that her daughter’s heart can be fixed. The only catch is she’ll have to travel to the 21st century to do so. His suggestion is ludicrous, but Carly is willing to do anything to save her daughter. She travels to the year 2001 to receive fetal surgery on her unborn daughter. What seems as a simple, miraculous solution turns into something Carly never could’ve expected.

The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain is a powerful story about motherhood, love, sacrifice and fate. I’m usually not a fan of time-traveling stories, but everyone has raved about this one since publication, so I finally picked it up. And wow am I glad I did! The first half of this story was riveting, so much so that I couldn’t put it down. It was full of twists and cliffhangers that left me frantically turning the pages. At the 50% mark, the book slowed down a lot, even if some twists were sprinkled in here and there. The ending wasn’t the one I wanted, but it “made sense. I would’ve liked the ending more if it was more flushed out. I didn’t get all the answers and the picture of Carly and Joanna’s futures that I wanted. With that said, this was an emotional read that will have you questioning “what would you do? and it’s one I’d highly recommend! 4.5/5 stars.
