Boring Boring Boring.
Every single chapter just goes on and on. I liked the change of Pip as a character as the story moved along but eventually, it just became so tiresome. The poor kid to riches storyline is just not my cup of tea. The book does get more interesting once he moves up in the world and we get to see him interacting with the upper class. However, it eventually becomes dull too. The whole mystery of who gave him the fortune was a plainly obvious one and the plot twists in the third act are novella levels of absurd. Dickens tried to introduce new characters along the way but none of them have a personality or are in any way memorable outside of being plot points.
By the time I hit the halfway point I could not stand the protagonist and Estella; the love interest. What an unlikable, bratty, pretentious, character. An insufferable "will they, won't they". Estella does not deserve the attention she is getting and Pip is an idiot for giving it. Blah love story.
Okay, then third act:(view spoiler) .
The lesson of this book is if you hate being poor you will magically get a lot of money and then can turn into a real brat who will try to chase after another brat to love you. Dull story, irritating characters, and (view spoiler) . Yuck.
