But the ending doesn't make sense. If the lion has to kill the deer, it doesn't wait until the deer is cured of its ailments !

I don't understand why Patrick left Eva at the end of the book. He should have agreed to retreat to Scottish castles. It might only have delayed the inevitable, though.I don't think Patrick will ever see her, again.
Please tell me if it ends with a cliffhanger. I cannot abide cliffhangers. Thanks
My sentiments exactly! So I decided to give 4 stars.
I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about the horrible ending..........I still gave it 5 stars; but it really should be 4. Left hanging after such detail down to the exact 'million.' Bah Humbug!
I know you read this 15 years ago, but I just finished it today and I agree. That ending was most unexpected!
