it was ok

Oof... it took me 12 days to finish this book. Not like me at all.

I liked the storyline. I love the fact that it is a book about books, and that is what initially made me want to read it. I read the blurb on the book and it sounded like a really fun read.

I was wrong.

The book was VERY long-winded. Whilst the plotline was good, and the characters were nicely built, the actual story dragged on most of the time. The best part of the book is the last few chapters, by which point I didn't care - I just wanted the book to end so I could move onto something more enjoyable.

I've given it 2 stars because the story is interesting, I just think that it could have been condensed into less pages. Either that or the writing could have had more cliffhangers - therefore making it more unputdownable. Maybe if I could read German, the original book may be more enticing. It's always possible with translations that the book doesn't end up coming across as the author intended it to. I guess I'll never know.

I have no desire whatsoever to read the other books. I think this generally works on its own as a standalone novel, but the thought of reading another 500 pages doesn't fill me with joy.

Dee I TOTALLY agree on everything you said!

Gitta I've read the German version and I can assure you that the issue is not with the translation.

Brittany Same - I just finished reading it in German and it felt like it dragged on. I'm excited to move on to other books.

Chelsea Cool. I totally agree with you. LOL :D

Veronica Ross I normally finish books Inkhearts size in about a week.
I started reading it on the first on June. Today is the last of June and I still have 100 pages left and I have to read it for school.
I don't know if I'll make it.

Carrie I'm on pg. 199 after about 5 days and I am ready to put it down and abandon it. It makes me feel much better to know that someone else who enjoys reading also feels the way I do about it now. It's just soooooooooo dragged out and usually I love books this long!

Teresa Mobley I also felt like it dragged. By the end it picked up, but it could have been half as long and been better. I'd also wondered if something had been lost in translation and I'm still wondering what everyone is raving about. Glad to know I'm not alone!

I already abandoned this book. It ultimately STANK, and I will not read the next ones. I am completely against this series.

message 9: by Smita (new)

Smita Yeah so true. i couldnot even finish it.. i better read high paced book ..

I was almost tempted to try reading it in German instead after reading this review, until I saw later comments saying it wasn't any better. *sigh*

Katrina I totally agree, I couldn't even.make myself finish it (so unlike me, I love most books)! It just dragged and dragged... *yawn*

NeonDarling I abandoned this book in 3RD GRADE!!! Now that I got back to it I thought "Wow I knew I never liked it since 3RD GRADE!"

Bryan Fields I basically agree with this review and the comments. I read it when i heard about the movie. I kept reading it just to get it done so I could move on to something else. I was so disappointed with the book, I've still not seen the movie.

Sven I totally agree with this!

Krummi í klettagjá My thoughts excactly!!

message 16: by Sara (new) - rated it 2 stars

Sara I couldn't agree with every word of your review more. I typically read between six and ten books in the course of a month - this book took me weeks to finish, because I kept losing interest. It just dragged so much, and the characters were so two-dimensional. The last few chapters picked up quite a bit, but it's ridiculous that it took me this long to reach them! I'm so glad it's over, and I don't plan on reading the sequels...

ej This completely embodies my opinion of the book. I don't think I can bring myself to read the sequels.

Elizabeth Engstrom I don't agree with you guys at all. I thought it was a great book. sure, it was a little slow in the beginning, but it gets better. the second two are really good too. Try reading it again. I almost guarantee you'll like/love it

Antonia Cameron I loved it in third grade. It changed my mind when it came to books. Plus it's not nearly as slow as the hobbit

Suhail I agree, my advice to everyone would be: switch to Funke's Reckless series. It's way better than this.

Cliff Jr. Why oh why is it so long? I'm actually listening to one of those Playaway audiobooks from the library, and they don't show you your progress as you go. I'm in chapter 24 now, and it feels like it's wrapping up. I just looked online to confirm that suspicion, and I see... Nope, not even halfway. 59 chapters. This story really feels like a middle grade read to me, so it ought to be either 1) a LOT shorter or 2) split up into three parts. But Inkheart is itself only book 1 of a trilogy? No, thanks.

Rachel A. Exactly how I'm feeling about the book, and I'm just over halfway through. The plot has potential, but it just drags so much!

Stella ☆Paper Wings☆ I agree, and I actually never finished it. However, to all of you who didn't like Inkheart, you should try some of Funke's other books, which I think are decent.

Sabrina Newlon Dee wrote: "I TOTALLY agree on everything you said!"

same here, i have to read it a bit by bit because i get extremely tired of reading the LONG chapters. I have been reading this book for about 6 months and i'm still not done. luckily i'm about 68% done.

Chloe Green This may come as a surprise to some but I read the all three books at the age of 10 and absolutely adored them. Three of my friends who were the same age as me also read them and thought they were great. The first book drags on a little bit but the second and third are great. Inkheart basically sets up the story and main characters for the other books but the description is worth it. Those who feel like this is too dark for there kids who are around 5 years old are probably right because this is not a children’s novel it’s a young adult novel and out of all the pages in the book there are only a few bad words. Altogether I’ve read this series three times and it never disappoints :)
