** spoiler alert **
After all, they were just kids. Just kids is a memoir written by acclaimed poet, songwriter, and artist Patti Smith. The book follows a young Patti and her love interest Robert. Throughout the book you learn how young starving artist lived. In Patti’s case is was anything but glamorous. She talks about struggling to pay rent and even eat all for the love of art. The actions of Patti Smith makes you question what is means so be truly passionate. As the book continues, Patti begins to meet new people and even celebrities. On one occasion she is in the same restas Jimi Hendrix. This is crazy to think of because in modern day many celebrities are hard to come across. Patti meets many of these celebrities and goes on to write poems and songs for them.
This book, as a whole, is beautifully written. The vocabulary is eloquent, and the words are extremely compelling. Although this is the case, there are some issues I have with this book. It was very difficult to get through this book. This is due to the plethora of dull moments. For example, the first several chapters are consumed by the youth of Patti Smith. To some this may be interesting, but I found it to be quite boring. She constantly goes on about her childhood, but it has very little to do with the story. To be frank, o don’t remember one detail from her childhood chapters. This is because they are utterly irrelevant to the story. Overall, I feel that the book could have benefited from a small bit of editing. One way the book could have been edited is through cutting the childhood section down. This section was in total very dull due to its lack of excitement. Another edit that she book may benefit from is Patti talking about her feelings for Robert more. This edit may improve the reader’s understanding for the love Robert and Patti share. These edits would help keep the story moving, and perhaps even more interesting. However, if one is persistent and reads through the dull moments, there is reward of some heart tugging tales.
Overall, I am rating this book four stars due to the long dull moments. However, the book is still a piece of art and is formatted beautifully. I would recommend this book to a reader that likes a slower paced book.
