New Moon (The Twilight Saga, #2)

What is it about vampires?
The characters in "New Moon," especially Bella, aren't very believable. The plot is predictable. The dialogue occasionally reads like a spoken encyclopedia entry.
But I loved the story. I tore through the entire thing last night.
"New Moon" is no work of literary genius. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful tale of supernatural teenage romance. Within the first few pages, I was hooked. The exquisite drama kept building and building. I knew what would happen, but I also knew I couldn't stop reading -- Bella and Edward's tale had to be told straight through.
Admittedly, I had to suspend a hefty portion of disbelief in the first quarter of the book. Bella overreacts strongly to a situation many of Meyer's readers have probably experienced, and counting myself amongst that number, I wanted to give the high schooler a good slap and tell her to get over it.
That's when it hit me -- Bella has vampires complicating her situation. I don't need to identify with her, but let her carry me along her fantastic emotional ride.
And it is a ride. By the end, I was reading about every 10 words, desperate to see what would happen next. Few stories manage to raise that kind of emotion in readers.
I highly doubt my reaction to "New Moon" would be anything near universal. But for us vampire fangirls and fanboys, it's a definite classic.
