The reviewer said that it was a book “you need to read right now , a novel that was immediately accelerated onto the Man Booker long list. Now having read I feel slightly deflated, the error of my ways being my grabbing a single opinion as gospel.
A sweeping statement but I love Irish writers and the nuances and wit and directness of the characters and the way they deal with their roller coaster relationship is enough to make it an absorbing read. But the story would have benefitted from being anchored more in time and place with the Irishness spread too thinly and the dynamics of the relationship dissipated by sideline detail and distraction.
I look forward to reading Rooney’s first novel and her next but Man Booker can surely wait for the time being ?
