The Great Alone

The last book I read, before THE GREAT ALONE, was a poorly written and conceived story I enjoyed reading. Kristin Hannah’s latest book is a well-written and conceived story that I didn’t particularly enjoy.
Hannah always hits all the marks with character development and intricate plots. Her epic reads span years, sometimes decades of ups and downs and ins and outs, atmospheric and rich in detail. For me, they aren’t page turners as much as books I hope the best for sympathetic characters.
THE GREAT ALONE deals with themes of Vietnam veteran PTSD with the added complication of not being a great guy before the war, domestic violence and substance abuse, as well as others that wouldn’t be considered spoilers.
For me, Hannah is a writer I’ll read when her books are on sale, I scooped up THE GREAT ALONE for $2.99 on a Kindle daily deal. She was once an automatic preorder, but my tastes in reading have changed to faster paced stories. It’s not her, it’s me.
