3.5 stars, almost a 4.
Gruesome. Violent. Disturbing.
I’m not going to lie to you here. I usually avoid books with this much blood, but I crave a good psychological thriller, I’m desperate for a twist I never saw coming, so sometimes I find myself drenched in stomach turning violence, like Darby, accidently stumbling through someone else’s blood. That’s what this was for me, a little more blood than I expected.
“A sloppy red bubble- saliva thickened with blood- blistered through his front teeth and splashed down to the floor.
I’m still a little dizzy from all the sickening events that unfolded at that ill-fated rest stop, and I wish I could say one of them was a mind-bending twist I never saw coming, but, sadly, I cannot say this. There wasn’t even a twist I felt clever for guessing. And that’s why, I’ve had to go with the 3.5 star. I wanted to give this a four, I really did, it was close, there was a lot going for it, and 3.5 is still good, but I needed any of the many twists to surprise me to go four, and unfortunately, they did not.
What I did like was the main character. Darby was a fantastic heroine and I was rooting for her the whole time. I loved her dearly, and I needed for her to be the heroine she was meant to be. I was happy with the page turning action packed forward momentum of the book. And I was happy with the ending, after the epilogue.
I’m guessing that Taylor Adams next book is going to be even better, and he’s going to have quite a cult of followers. In that regard, I’d call this book a success.
Trigger warnings; extreme violence, child abduction, human trafficking, alluding to rape.
