Reading for the 2nd time. Most recently started April 6, 2025.
This book will be one of my favorites of the year. After reading Parable of the Sower, I guess I was on a dystopian kick? Severance was the critique of capitalism I needed, combined with a touching story of familial love. Ling Ma perfectly captures just how lonely it can feel to live in New York, despite it being one of the busiest places in the world, and reading this book helped me get through a tough week. Ling Ma's writing style is wild, I don't see any dryness at all. I see someone smartly stating the facts, someone who manages to leave me pondering the meaning of all "this" after what seems to be a simple observation by Candace. I couldn't put this book down and found myself thinking about it all day. Shen Fever is so realistic that sometimes I found myself laughing out of discomfort. A phenomenal book that was right on time for me, so so creative, and so just...smart.
