On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

I very much enjoyed reading this memoir. The book is full of useful advice dropped in various places in the course of what feels like a story of King's life as a writer. First, he tips his hat, in what may be a legendary preface, to William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White.
The approach of showing how life shaped SK into the writer that he became, by selection of apropos vignettes from his memory, made for great reading, though some of it was emotionally hard. King has a great sense of humour and brought me to laughter; in other of these vignettes, I kept thinking Poor little Steve, how awful! When we get to the part where Carrie brings him great success, I also wanted to cry. This is a great story in itself, in which King is the character. Maybe it is a great Comedy, wherein our writer, the hero, succeeds in the end after many trials and hardships.
The advice for writers is dispersed throughout all sections of the book. Some of it is given directly; some of it is there to glean between the lines. The book is an easy quick read, but it is also the sort of book which will repay careful re-reading. I look forward to that.

"Just received this one from Amazon Prime today. Why is Amazon sending books in bubble-wrap mailers that are much too large for the books? It arrived with all four corners of the covers bent; with nicks & gouges cutting into the page edges; covers scuffed & scratched; with crap bar-code sticker residue; & a perforation in the rear cover that makes an impression through the last 30 pages of the book. Damn it, Amazon!"

"I love King's second foreword, pg. ix, and the praise he offers there to Strunk & White's Elements of Style."

""When you write a story, you're telling yourself the story," he said. "When you rewrite, your main job is taking out all the things that are not the story."
Gould said something else that was interesting on the day I turned in my first two pieces: write with the door closed, rewrite with the door open." (p. 57)"

"The writer's original perception of a character or characters may be as erroneous as the reader's. . . . stopping a piece of work just because it's hard, either emotionally or imaginatively, is a bad idea. (p. 77)"
