Vampires. New Orleans. 1800's. This book spoke to my soul.
This was my second book from Ahdieh and a complete change from The Wrath and the Dawn. In The Beautiful, we follow Celine as she arrives in New Orleans looking to start over after a horrible altercation in Paris. She is instantly taken in by the beauty and magic of New Orleans, I mean, who wouldn't be? But soon she finds herself immersed in the world of La Cour des Lions - or the Court of Lions, and drawn to their leader Sébastien Saint Germain - or Bastien as he likes to be called. Soon people around Celine are dying - throats ripped out and blood missing from their bodies. Something is after Celine that's not human and she must put her trust and life in the hands of the Lions if she hopes to make it out alive.
I've never been to New Orleans but it's on my list of places I need to go. The way Ahdieh wrote New Orleans just added to the allure and mystery of this infamous city. The sights, the smells, the food, the colors - all came alive and just added to the detail of the story. And then it was made better with the addition of the supernatural.
I am of the variety who love a good vampire book. And for awhile there, after Twilight YA saw a surge in vampire books to the point that it was overboard. But it has since calmed down and now we get vampire books popping up here and there and a lot of them are fantastic. So when I heard this was going to have vampires, I knew it was for me.
This book was full of mystery, intrigue, whodunit, and of course, romance. The ending was just plain mean and I hate that I have to wait a year for the sequel! I definitely recommend this to vampire fans everywhere!

"Lucifer," Celine said in a flat voice. "Lucifer would have a pet snake."
