My first of Lahiri's books. I gave 3 stars because in some places in the book, I find her writing inconsistent.

I studied Bay Bengal during my high school Geography class back in 1993. That was merely the geographic side. 'The Interpreter of Maladies' details the war, people, culture and lifestyle of the Bengalis. Wow! We learn new things everyday.

I must admit the first two stories enthrall me.
A Temporary Matter - when grief is temporary and life has to go on, we can't help it but let time heals. When you cannot communicate your feelings to your better half, it's such a pain! They are all temporary matter but love has to go on.

Lahir is familiar with her characters. They are real life people. Boori Ma's descriptions are very impressive. Her voice is brittle with sorrows. Her mouth is full of ashes.!!Lahir is really brilliant. (Who would ever thought of creating a stairs - sweeper character!)

Anyway, Mr Pizarda is back home with her seven 'A' daughters. Thanks be to the candy prayers! How sweet...
